You know when your alarm goes off, and you know you should get up, but you hit snooze ... and a few minutes go by ... and you alarm goes off and you KNOW you should get up, but you hit snooze ... and a few minutes go by ...
That's how I've felt about this blog. I know I should be writing, but I simply can't muster the interest in pre-season baseball.
What little I've seen has been encouraging, though (except for continued subpar play-by-play work). I saw AJ Burnett groove a first-pitch fastball to some 13-year-old on the Jays last night that was promptly converted into a triple. Burnett keep tossing fastballs, he obviously wanted to work on that pitch, and struck out Aaron Hill, the second batter. The next batter reached and then Burnett got a groundball double play. Inning over, runner stranded.
Sure, it's preseason, but with those Yankees, that runner scores, maybe on a grounder to the right side. Maybe on a passed ball. But that runner becomes a deficit, and the Yankees are behind. AGAIN.
I saw CC Sabathia pitch a few innings, too. He's wearing his hat straight, which is nice. But his pants look more suited to a WWI general than a major leaguer. Maybe that'll get sorted out. Either way, he K'd 7 in 4 innings, 1 walk, 1 hit.
Hmmm ...
Mo Rivera is just frightening. Seriously, he IS pitching machine sent from the future. How can a human maintain that level of consistency? Same warm up, same wind up, same pitch, for a decade-plus.
Obviously health will dictate how these Yankees do, but maybe this pitching staff can deliver on the promise $200 milion has made. Sprinkle in some runs and solid defense, for the love of god, play defense, and my grandmother will survive this season.
